Vernon Gary Huster

May 28, 1937 — February 4, 2024

Newkirk, OK

Vernon “Rusty” Huster, 86, longtime resident of Newkirk, OK, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family and his wife Thelma of 63 years.

Rusty was born on May 28th, 1937, in Newkirk, to Frank and Clara Huster. He was raised on a farm and because of that, he was blessed to live a long life doing the things he loved most, farming and ranching. It didn’t matter to him if the cattle were his, he still worried about them being fed and watered. He was a true caretaker of the land and livestock.

He married Thelma Buellesfeld in 1960, and they spent 63 years loving each other. They raised three children together: Sherry, Wade, and Justin. Rusty served 6 months in the United States Army. He loved to read Western books and watch Gunsmoke. Rusty also loved to sip whiskey, Jack Daniels being his favorite, because he honestly believed it made him healthy.

For many years, Rusty loved taking Thelma dancing on New Year’s Eve with many other relatives. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and riding horses with them. Some of his most treasured animals were his horses. When he wasn’t farming or ranching, he loved to go fishing and coon hunting.

Rusty loved spending time with family, often visiting and sharing stories with them. What great memories of the importance of family he has left to his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, also in-laws and nieces and nephews.

Rusty is survived by his wife Thelma of the home; daughter Sherry and husband Jeff Vincent of Ponca City, OK; sons: Wade and wife Lisa Huster of Newkirk, OK, and Justin and wife Caila Huster of Newkirk, OK; one brother, Kenneth and wife Barbara Huster of Newkirk, OK; one sister, Ann and husband Herb Kunz of Douglass, KS; 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank, and mother, Clara; brothers: Jim, Ernie, Jack, and Jerry Huster.

At his request, cremation has been affected. The family would like to thank Hospice of North Central Oklahoma in Ponca City. A special thank you goes to Karen Speers and Terrie Loftis. He loved his time with you both. We would also like to thank Chaplain Eric Garza for coming to the home and praying for him. Donations may be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, 445 Fairview, Ponca City, OK 74604.

Memorial services for Rusty will be at 11:00 A.M., on the 29th of February 2024, at the Rise Up Church in Newkirk, OK. Please join the family at the graveside to lay him to rest with a Celebration of Life to follow.
