Mary Lou Stephens

August 17, 1938 — December 1, 2022

Mary Lou Stephens, 84, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister and a lifetime resident of Newkirk was called to her eternal resting place on December 1, 2022. She entered this world on August 17, 1938 in Ponca City, Oklahoma, born to Floyd R. and LaVerna Tipton Greenwood.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2022 in the Chapel of Grace Memorial Chapel in Ponca City, OK.  Interment will follow in the Newkirk City Cemetery under the care of Miller Stahl Funeral Services of Newkirk.

She grew up in Kay County and started grade school at Star School, east of Newkirk; then finishing with   Newkirk School system graduating in 1956.

She met the love of her life Donald G. Stephens and they were married August 10, 1958 in Newkirk, OK and they made their home in Newkirk. Donald preceded her in death in 2016 after 57 years of marriage. Mary Lou enjoyed traveling and in the late 80’s, she took a trip to the Holy Lands (Jerusalem) where she was baptized in the Jordan River and rode a camel. She also enjoyed going to the Gospel Jubilee and playing Bingo. Mary Lou was a past member of the Eastern Stars and she participated in League Bowling. Mary Lou was also a Kaw Nation Tribal Member.  Mary Lou was never idle, she was the co-owner and operator of the Newkirk Cafe for several years until she got into the Real Estate Business and was an active realtor in the area for many years.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her sons; Kevin Stephens and wife Rhonda, Greg Stephens and wife Alvia, and Brett Stephens and wife Carole all of Newkirk,OK.  One sister, Catherine Croft of Ponca City, OK.  Grandchildren; Laci Bemo and husband Cody, Michele Lightsey and husband Jace, Cheyenne Stephens and Shanna Stephens all of Newkirk, OK, great grandchildren, Braelynn and Natalie. Mary Lou is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, daughter, Shelle Stephens and one brother, David Greenwood.
