Irma Lee Bain, longtime rural Newkirk resident passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, September 11, 2023.
She was the daughter of Archie Jacob and Rose Lorene (Bryson) Kail. Born on February 16, 1932, in Ralston, OK. A few years after Irma’s birth the family moved to farm northeast of Newkirk along the Arkansas River where she was then raised.
She attended Deer Creek School and Newkirk High School where she graduated with the class of 1950. While in high school she played the trombone in the NHS band. Upon graduation Irma attended Northern Oklahoma College where she took business classes and worked in the cafeteria. About a year and a half into college at NOC she received a job offer from Eastman National Bank. So began her career as a bank teller at Eastman National Bank. While working at the bank she attended youth group services where she would meet her future husband J. Wayne Bain. They were married after 3 years of dating on November 17, 1956. She worked at the bank until the birth of her daughter Jana in 1964. She returned to the bank in 1976 and worked until her retirement on May 31, 1995. Irma was a member of the First Christian Church in Newkirk. She enjoyed living on the farm, was active in the Newkirk Senior Center and enjoyed going to eat there and playing bingo, her greatest joy were her grandsons and loved every moment she got to spend with them. She absolutely loved her great granddaughter Lainey and cherished the time she had with her.
Irma was preceded in death by her husband J. Wayne, her parents Archie and Lorene Kail: father-in-law Virgil Bain mother-in-law Mae Bain, sister Twila Balzer, brother Ross Kail, sister in-law Karen Kail, her brother’s in-law & sisters in-law, Jack & Evalyn Bain, Bob & Pearl McCord, and Al & Theda Sheets.
Irma is survived by her daughter Jana and her husband Barry Leatherman of Newkirk, grandsons Jon Tyler Leatherman and his fiancé Alisha Nieshe of Owasso, OK, Dawson Wayne Leatherman of Newkirk and his girlfriend Kayla White of Ponca City, OK. One great granddaughter Lainey Leatherman of Owasso, OK. Also surviving are numerous nieces & nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday September 16, 2023, in the First Christian Church, Newkirk. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday at Miller Stahl Funeral Home with the family in attendance to receive friends and relatives from 5 pm to 7 pm
